Fastest Lap: Valiante, 1m06.549 (94.938 mph)
Michael Valiante (Lynx Racing Swift 014.a) won Saturday's event after a daring
inside pass in Turn 1. However, the Stewards determined that Valiante had
shortcutted the course during that move and was assessed a five point penalty
according to rule 6.13 of the 2002 CART Toyota Atlantic Championship Rulebook.
The point deduction was levied per rule 10.8. The reduction reduces Valiante's
Championship points lead down to 14 points heading into next week's Round 8
race at the Marconi Grand Prix of Cleveland.
Also, third place finisher in yesterday's race, Rocky Moran Jr. (Sigma Autosport
Swift 014.a), was fined 14 Championship points along with the forfeiture of
$10,000 in race winnings after his car failed the post race inspection per rule
9.2.2c (Item 6). The points and money penalties were per rule 10.8 and 10.9.
The point reduction drops Moran Jr. from third to eighth place in the
Championship with 59 points.
Finally, a pair of drivers were placed on probation for the next two races for
multiple incidents in yesterday's race. Grant Ryley (Lynx Racing/Northwest
Speedwerx/ Cupertino Electric Swift 014.a) and Waldemar Coronas (Scuadra
Fortia/Aviacsa/ Royse/Maizoro/Millenio Swift 014.a) were placed on probation per
rule 8.13 for taking unjustifiable risk.
