The A-Z of Racing Cars

Thompson Sears Allstate Special

Built for the 1964 Indianapolis 500, the ill-prepared car was considered exceedingly dangerous by the drivers who tried it, especially after USAC decreed that 15in wheels and tyres had to be used - the front bodywork was partially cut away to make room for the larger tyres, which caused the front end to lift. Dave MacDonald drove it in the race, but crashed fatally on lap 2.
