The Montamarathon Trophy was held for the first time on the newly constructed board oval at Tacoma, and was open to cars with a 450 cubic inch maximum capacity. The race was marred by the fatal accident of William Carlson, which also killed his mechanician Paul Framzen. Following the accident, the Maxwell team manager Ray Harroun retired the team, and the cars never raced again.

The race was open to cars with a maximum capacity of 300 cubic inches, and was the first National Championship Trail race to be held on this board oval. As at the Tacoma board oval, the race was marred by fatal accidents. Billy Chandler's accident, although not fatal to the driver, resulted in the death of his riding mechanic, Morris Kessler. Joe Cooper's accident was caused by a blown tyre, and the car flipped over the fourth turn wall. A.F.Scott crashed while trying to avoid hitting Cooper.
