Won the Irish tarmac rally championship four times.Was flying home from a birthday celebration in County Mayo in a helicopter when it crashed into a woodland at Monea, nr Enniskillen, killing his daughter Emma and son Mark. Bertie died later on Monday night in Belfast Royal Victoria Hospital. He had lived in Gublusk, and ran his won company, Fisher Engineering.

He was signed by Peugeot UK to race a works 206 S1600 in the Formula Rally Series for 2001, but never got the chance, being killed instantly in the helicopter crash which claimed the lives of his father and his sister.

Son of a wealthy Palermo merchant, Florio had taken part in the Paris races, and in 1904 started organising events, including the Coppa Florio. What Florio really wanted was an event to rival the French GP, so he commissioned an ornate solid gold plate trophy, and decided on a 92 mile circuit in the Madonie Mountains of Sicily. The Targa Florio was born.
