James, Bob (USA)

Spent 3 years fighting in World War II, including landings in France, Italy and North Africa. He returned to his bride Mary Catherine "Kitty", and started racing in 1945 at Berea Fairgrounds, winning the feature event at the track in only his second appearance. He won two Ohio State championships, and was runner-up in the Eastern States points championship. He began running in NASCAR and MARC (to become ARCA) events in the 1950s, winning 15 series in total. In all, James won more than 1000 races, before retiring in 1975. He died in his sleep from cancer at home, and is survined by daughters Cathleen, Michelle and Heather.

Jano, Vittorio (I)

Starting work at the age of 18 in the Italian motor industry, Jano moved to Fiat in 1911, and Alfa Romeo in 1923, at the behest of Enzo Ferrari. He designed a series of winning cars, but after a series of race failures against the Mercedes and Auto Union teams, Jano was sacked in 1938. After the war, Jano joined Lancia, designing the D50, and later at Ferrari he designed the V6 engine for the Ferrari 246 "Dino". He comitted suicide in 1965, rather than facing the prospect of dying from illness.

Junek, Elizabeth (CZ)


Christened Alzbìta Pospíšilová, she used the name Eliška. She married Czech banker Cenek Junek who funded her racing in the 1920s (she anglicised her name from Eliška Junková-Khásová to Elizabeth Junek). She ran fourth in the 1927 Targa Florio before her steering broke, and won the 1.5-3 litre class of the German GP at the Nürburgring on her first visit there. Led the 1928 Targa Florio until water pump failure forced her to back off. On returning to the Nürburgring, her husband crashed and was killed, and Elizabeth withdrew from racing, although she returned in the 1960s for one off historic demonstrations.
