He passed away despite immediate action from the circuit four's doctors. He is sruvived by his wife Sandra and two children.

Won a competition in the TV Times magazine to win a drive in a rally car. He was sponsored to drive a Nissan 240RS in 1985, and was offered a works Ford drive for the 1986 British Rally Championship in a Ford RS200. He won the championship, despite not winning a round. He continued rallying for Ford, Toyota and VW, spending much of his time in the Far East until he was entered in the 2001 American SCCA ProRally series by Subaru, which he won, winning six of the ten rounds.

He was entered in the 2003 ProRally Championship for Subaru Rally Team USA, and won the Pikes Peak Hillclimb round of the championship. On the first stage of the Oregon Trail ProRally, Lovell left the road and hit a tree, killing both himself and his co-driver, Roger Freeman. He was survived by his wife Julia, and his two children Oliver and Thomas.
