Robson, George (USA)

b 1909 (Newcastle-upon-Tyne, GB) - d 2/9/1946 (Atlanta)

1946 - Indycars (Adams-Sparks): 1 win (Indy 500)

Emigrated to Canada with his family in 1917 before moving to the US in 1924. Started racing in 1930 and Chowchilla, California, on the "outlaw" circuit. He was a consistent winner along with his brother Hal, and in 1939 he attempted to qualify for the Indy 500, failing to do so. In 1940 he retired on the 67th lap of the Indy 500 with a broken shock absorber, and in 1941 he retired on lap 66 with an oil leak. He won in 1946, starting 15th on the grid in the Thorne Engineering Special. Unfortunately, George never had the chance to defend his crown at Indy, as he was killed in a multi-car pile-up at Lakewood Speedway, Atlanta on September 2nd 1946 in a Cliff Bergere's Burd Piston Ring Special, which won the 500 in 1938 in the hands of Floyd Roberts and in which Roberts was killed the following year. When the wreckage of Robson's car was returned, Bergere was so upset at the deaths of both Robson and Roberts in the same car that he took an acetylene torch to it and cut it into pieces, saying "Two of my best friends have been killed in that thing, and that's two too many". Robson entered a total of 17 Championship races, starting 12, finishing second twice, and winning once.
