"Sabipa" (F)

b 1890

Real name was Louis Charavel

Born in the South of France in 1890, Sabipa started racing in 1920 when he finshed 4th in the Cyclecar GP at Le Mans (Weler). The following year he bought a Bugatti which he drove in minor events for the next four years. In 1925 he drove in the 12 Hour Touring Car GP at San Sebastian, winning the 1500cc class single-handed. He was a member of the Bugatti works team in the 1926 Italian GP at Monza which he won (in a type T39A), and in the 1927 Targa Florio he had a lucky escape when he skidded in avoiding a large boulder in the road, and ended up unhurt in a garden 50 feet below. He had another lucky escape in the 1930 French GP at Pau when he overturned and was thrown out into the road, to be narrowly missed by Birkin's Bentley which was following close behind. In the 1928 Le Mans race he drove an Itala, finishing 8th. He last appeared in competition at the Le Mans 24 Hrs of 1932 and 1933, when he drove an Alfa Romeo with Mme. Siko, finishing 4th in 1932. The pseudonym of Sabipa was acquired when in response to a journalist's question he answered in Provencal dialect "Sabe pas" (I don't know).

Worked between 1963 and 1964 as a development engineer for Marcos, racing the cars occasionally if they hadn't been sold by the company owner beforehand! Ran a GT40 engined Ford during 1967, winning many national races. He bought a Ford Falcon for 1968, but was telephoned by Ford and offered a drive. He was tested at Snetterton, partnering Brian "Yogi Bear" Muir. He then got the drive, and was entered in the Sportscar race at Spa. He had problems with the screen misting up in the wet, but due to the slope of the GT40 windscreen, he couldn't reach it, so proceeded to undo his seat belts to clean the windscreen while doing 200mph towards Stavelot! He drove in five sportscar championship rounds for Ford, as well as many other non-championship rounds. He also drove in F5000, driving BRM and Lola cars. He was employed by Ford until 1981, but subsequently became a race instructor at Castle Combe, occasionally entering saloon car races such as the Spa 6 Hrs.

In 1994 he joined another F1 project, Ikuzawa International, but this failed to get going, so he joined Durango, which also failed to get going in F1. Shambaugh, Charles "Charlie" (USA)

b - d

One of the earliest automobile dealers in Lafayette, Indiana, Shambaugh started with Buick before taking on Packard. At its peak, the Shambaugh garage was the largest in Lafayette, covering half a city block. He was known for offering racing people "down on their luck" jobs in the off-season, and for at least a couple of years each, two Indianapolis 500 winning drivers worked as salesmen there (Ralph DePalma and George Souders). As well as trying to periodically get a car of his own construction into the Indy 500 in the 1910's, he bought 500 acres of farmland to the south of Lafayette and built the towns first airport, named Shambaugh Airport, which operated until the 1930s when it was overtaken by another private field. Along with his brothers, who ran a very successful "rigging" business, Charles built numerous specialized cranes and other machinery for construction and demolition projects around the city, and Shambaugh Trucking was in constant demand in the 1940's and 50's to install heavy machinery in factories.

Shambaugh Packard closed for good in 1955 after his death. Shambaugh's widow, Gertrude, was quite a figure in the social life of Lafayette through the early 1970's, when she finally died of old age. She had been quite a patron of the arts, a benefactor of many organizations, including both the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, the YMCA, and a lifetime honorary member of Lafayette Indiana Historic Auto Club. Getrude Shambaugh, in her later years, tended to dismiss her late husband's attempts at building race cars, and even more his penchant for trying to drive them - those were perhaps a considerable bone of contention in their household.

Started as a mechanic at Team Lotus in 1980. Left Benetton at the beginning of 1993 to join Ferrari. He was appointed team coordinator once Jean Todt joined the team, taking the responsibilities of chief mechanic and chassis production. He famously broke his ankle in 1999 while refuelling Michael Schumacher's car in the Spanish GP, the brake man signalling the car to leave while the fuel rig was still attached to the car - Schumacher's rear wheel knocked him over. He was planning to leave Ferrari at the end of 2000, but moved into a managerial role at Ferrari instead.
He later became chief mechanic at Ferrari, but left under a cloud in 2007 after being accused of sabotage by Ferrari.

Became the youngest pilot in England at the age of 17 in 1929. He bought a Brooklands Riley in 1931, and entered his first race in February 1932, racing in the Swedish Winter GP. For 1933, he took British citizenship and purchased an MG K3, and raced it at Shelsley Walsh and Brooklands, before going overseas and entering the Marne GP, where he finished last with severe burns to his feet. He also entered the 1933 Coppa Acerbo (retired), and won the 1100cc Junior event, as well as setting a new record at the Mont Ventoux hillclimb, winning the event. He also won the Brooklands Mountain Championship.
For 1934, Whitney Straight Ltd purchased three Maserati 8CM cars, had two of them modified by Reid Railton, and based his team in Milan. As well as running other drivers, Straight finished 2nd in the 1934 Vichy GP, 3rd in the Comminges GP, and 4th at Casablanca and Montreux. He then won the Donington Park Trophy and the Brooklands Mountain Championship. He also set a new record at Shelsley Walsh, and finished 3rd in the Klausen hillclimb. He was then offered a works Auto Union drive for 1935, but he refused. He had decided to retire from racing, and his swansong race was the 1934 South African GP, which he won.
Subsequent to this Straight purchased a series of airports, before flying Blenheims and Hurricanes in World War 2. After the war, he headed BOAC, BEA, Rolls Royce and the British Post Office.
